Ahhh my third guest post. If any of you have ever spent any time in my comment’s section then you know DCD. DCD is my friend Dana. She has been my biggest supporter here in Carolyn Online land. I keep telling Dana to start a blog, I know she wants to. And I think if you have the need to write and the need to use your voice then you do it. DO IT. To push her off the cliff I said, “Come over here for a day, try it out, do my work for me while I’m on vacation.” She said, “Ok.” So here’s Dana with her first blog post ever (ok, not ever because she’s got her own url now) and a link to her new blog Dana’s Brain. Welcome to the blog world my friend! You people be nice to Dana. Bring her a casserole or a pie or something.
Is it just me?
So, here’s my thing. Married, two kids aged five and two (and oh, so cute they are!) Both my husband and I work full-time in the Hospitality Industry. I’m so glad they finally have a name for us. It’s not just “I work in a hotel, or a restaurant” – we are part of the “Hospitality Industry.” Although I hardly ever find that in your standard list of jobs you get when filling out some stupid form about what you do. But I digress.
My thing is – we don’t seem to ever do anything. And I don’t mean we don’t go out occasionally – very occasionally. We do. Or that we don’t take the kids to the park or, well, the park. And I visit with my sister (who blessedly lives in the same town that I do.) But other than that we have NO motivation. There are no family hobbies. No home improvement projects. Wait. let me clarify – there are tons of home improvement projects that could be done, we just have no interest in doing them. No dog training, which would really benefit all of us. No sewing, scrapbooking or stargazing. (Okay, I admit I pushed the alliteration on that one.) I talk to my brother out in CA after we haven’t talked in two weeks, and I have nothing interesting to say. Nothing!
You know, it’s just as much as we can do to go to work, come home, eat dinner, get the kids bathed and into bed. Oh, and do the eight million loads of laundry that mysteriously appear every night.
Sometimes I am fine with this. I get that this is just what life is right now. But then I start to get kind of paranoid. Other people seem to accomplish things in their lives – what’s our problem?? Are we just lazy? What kind of example is that for our kids? If Jake, (the 5yr old) leaves his shoes wherever he takes them off, is that just part of him being 5, or is it something deeper that is already being ingrained into his little psyche? Namely, Mommy’s sloppiness gene.
These are the things that keep me up at night. Or they would, if I didn’t perpetually drown out my worries with wine and a Tylenol PM.
now you’ll have something to tell your brother. You’ll say, well I’m writing a blog and he’ll say what the? Why? And then you’ll try to come up with an answer, which will be kinda hard to do, so instead you’ll just say, same old same old. And pour a glass of wine.
At least that’s what I do.
And then, to continue Ms. Picket’s comment, you can write something about your brother from when you were little, and since it’s YOUR BLOG, you can make shit up! It rocks! Trust me.
How does that Tylenol PM work for you? I’m gettin’ older by the minute and insomnia sucks.
You don’t have to be a world traveler, inventor of some gadget that’s better than sliced bread, healer of some unspeakable disease to have fun in blogland. Just try it. I don’t write in mine every day but I plan to get better at it because its a handy-dandy release. Plus, pics are always good, and if I can download pictures on to my blog, anybody can. If you write, I will come and visit. (I was going to say “we” but I can’t speak for everybody else – one of my early life lessons.)
Welcome to the blogging world. We are in the same boat. We do “stuff” but it’s just the mundane every day stuff. Sometimes it gets frustrating but other times, it’s just- well, relaxing! I keep saying to myself that once the kids get to X age, I’ll start this hobby or that one but we’ll see!
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
Middle aged woman, I love me some Tylenol PM. I often only take one which I think is less sleep aid than you get in Benedryl. But it seems to be enough that if I do wake-up, I can get back to sleep without my brain going into overload.
NOW I know why you wanted me to read your guest spot…
See? We do share this little quirk of parental life. Trying to get together with those without kids is a kick in the teeth. They have concerts, poetry readings, yoga classes, to schedule around . We got nothing, but just pray nobody throws up as we are trying to leave the house to spend time with actual adults…
Great guest spot, you’re gonna be very popular on your blog. (I hope you still remember us when you are a blog-star.)
Hi Jen W, I’m the other Carolyn who visits Carolyn…Online all the time. You just can’t go wrong pronouncing our name if you say Ca-roll-lynn, it basically sounds the same. Hope that helps you out. Nice guest post. xxoo
